Calvin Richard Klein was born in the Bronx, New York, where he spent all of his childhood.  His grandmother was a seamstress, and he acquired his love of sewing from her while his mother encouraged his love of art and fashion.

Calvin Klein is one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. He began as a fashion illustrator and then started his own fashion company and has since then made a name for himself as a fashion designer and businessman.

Klein attended the High School of Art and Design which prepared students for careers in advertising and drafting.

As a youth while others his age were playing sports, Klein was busy studying sketching fashion, designs and sewing.

Later he moved on to the esteemed Fashion Institute of Technology, graduating in 1962. 

He spent five years as an apprentice in a coat and suit house on Seventh Avenue in New York City working long nights and weekends to perfect his own designs.

In 1968 Klein and close childhood friend Barry Schwartz created a Calvin Klein coat business and managed to secure an order worth fifty thousand dollars which was a huge amount at that time.  Encouraged by favourable reviews from the fashion press and the support of store executives, Klein expanded his line to include women’s sportswear.

The brand of Calvin Klein became famous for its minimalism and classic style and helped launch the craze for designer jeans in the 1970’s when Klein began adding his name on the back pocket. 

Today, Calvin Klein is known worldwide for their jeans, casual collections and perfumes.  Watches and jewellery collection became part of the brands offering in 1997. The company’s CK logo is as recognisable as its brand name and adorns many products in their line.

Advertising was the key to Klein’s success. 

He kept the media talking about him by creating controversy.  He was the first to design women’s underwear that looked like men’s jockey shorts.  His television advertisements for jeans starred Brooke Shields. Klein developed a reputation for pushing the boundaries of acceptability in his campaigns.

Time magazine named Klein as one of the twenty-five most influential Americans.

He built a financially strong company with the continued advice and help of partner Barry Schwartz, who guided the company through tough financial times in the late 1980’s.   Few designers have rivalled his worldwide empire.

 

Obsession

Klein’s first perfume was released in 1985 under the name Obsession.

The fragrance became an instant hit, making it to the list of the best-selling perfumes of all time. The perfume was launched at Bloomingdales departmental store in New York City.

The success of Obsession led to the release of Eternity, which also became extremely popular among people all over the world. Today, there are more than 50 scents available from Calvin Klein. The most popular ones are CK One, Escape, Euphoria, Truth, CK Be and CK IN2U for men while Eternity Summer 2010, Beauty, CK Free for Her are some of the most popular scents for women.

Calvin Klein Perfumes continues to innovate and grow with a global presence in more than 80 countries. The house has earned over 100 awards and recognitions since its inception, including multiple honours at the prestigious FiFi Awards and Fragrance Foundation Awards.

The first fragrance he launched in 1983 won the FiFi Award in 1984 for Best Women’s Fragrance in the United States.

The following year, it won FiFi Awards for Best Packaging, Best Women’s Fragrance and Specialty Retailers Choice. In 1980, he launched Obsession for Men which won many awards during its time including three FiFi’s in 1981 for Best Men’s Fragrance Specialty Retailing Awards, Best Packaging and Best Advertising Campaign.

Contradiction in 1991

Calvin Klein launched his next scent called Contradiction in 1991 which won the 1992 FiFi Award for Specialty Retailers Choice. After that came Eternity Aqua which received a FiFi award for Best Packaging again in 1994.

Eternity Aqua also received another award during this year by winning Temptation For Women Under 25 at 1995 FiFi Awards. His next fragrance was One in 1996 which won another FiFi Award that year for Most Popular Men’s Colognes.

Today, Calvin Klein Fragrances is a division of Coty Inc., a leading global beauty company that holds licenses for some of the best-known fragrances in the world, including those from Calvin Klein, philosophy, Bvlgari, Playboy, Davidoff and others.

 

Conclusion

Calvin Klein’s life is an example of someone who found a way to make money.

The biographies written about him do not emphasise the risks he took, but they were surely enormous.

There are three main pieces of advice in “How to Make Money”: find something people want that doesn’t exist yet, then figure out how to give it to them, then figure out how to deliver it to them at a lower price than your competitors.

Calvin Klein did all this.  He had an idea for selling sexier underwear for men, with colours and fabrics that were so expensive they had never been used before. He figured out how to deliver this product at a lower price than his competitors by building worldwide factories so he could manufacture so efficiently he could charge the same price as the boring underwear sold by his competitors.

Then he sold it everywhere. He moved onto shirts, shorts, perfume — all sorts of things. He made a lot of money and made everyone who bought his products feel good about themselves.
