Hugo Ferdinand Boss joined the Nazi Party on 1 April 1933, became a member of the SS five years later and of the Nazi Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront) in 1936. In December 1936, he became a government supplier, and in 1938 he received the German National Prize (“Deutsche Staatspreis”) for his company’s production of uniforms to the German Armed Forces.

In 1941 Hugo Boss joined the Luftwaffe as a “Wehrwirtschaftsführer”, a title awarded to suppliers to the German armed forces. On 8 May 1945, as Allied troops neared his hometown of Metzingen, Hugo Boss ordered all documents to be burned. This order was not fully carried out, resulting in some archive material being spared from destruction. In 1948 he was sentenced to two years’ probation for his use of forced labour during WWII.

Metzingen

Boss used slave labour during World War II. According to German historian Henning Kober, who worked as head of research for Germany’s Central Committee for Investigation of Nazi Crimes.
